Reviving Industrial History: AJS Masonry Restores Harmony Mills Buildings 1 & 4 in Cohoes, NY

As part of the second phase of renovations to the iconic Harmony Mills complex in Cohoes, NY, AJS Masonry, Inc. was contracted to complete the masonry restoration package for the historic Building #1 and Building #4. These monumental brick and stone structures, originally constructed over 175 years ago, are central to the region’s industrial heritage and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The scope of work required a thoughtful and skilled approach to preserve the character and integrity of the existing structures. AJS Masonry crews performed:

  • Chemical cleaning of the building exteriors to remove biological growth and environmental staining

  • Masonry repointing to restore weathered joints and prevent water intrusion

  • Stone patching to repair eroded or damaged areas while maintaining historical accuracy

  • Rebuilding of deteriorated masonry sections, bringing new life to structural and decorative features

Working with materials that have withstood nearly two centuries of exposure, AJS focused on using historically appropriate techniques and mortar blends to ensure long-lasting results that honor the original craftsmanship.

The Harmony Mills project underscores AJS Masonry’s reputation as a trusted leader in historic masonry restoration across the Capital Region, with a growing portfolio of preservation work in Cohoes, Albany, Schenectady, and beyond.

When it comes to preserving New York’s architectural legacy, AJS Masonry brings precision, experience, and deep respect for the past.
